Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched a program for rural women under which 11 thousand destitute women in South Punjab will be given cows and buffaloes worth two billion rupees.
According to a statement issued by the Punjab government on Sunday, rural women in Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Leh and Kot Addu will get free buffaloes and cows.
Cows and buffaloes will also be given to rural women of Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Wahari, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar and Rahimyar Khan. Poor rural women will earn employment by rearing these cows and buffaloes.
According to the statement, the livestock project will increase milk production by rearing good breed cows and buffaloes.
Rural women in 12 districts can apply for livestock project till November 16.
Maryam Nawaz has said that the financial independence of rural women of Punjab is among the priorities. Rural women will get employment opportunities from livestock project.
He said that development and prosperity is the right of every woman of Punjab. Livestock project will meet the target of increasing milk and meat production.
It should be noted that in the year 2016, the then Chief Minister of Punjab Shehbaz Sharif also started the project of distribution of high breed cows and buffaloes under phased distribution of livestock for the welfare of poor and widowed rural women. While in the year 2018, former Prime Minister Imran Khan presented a plan to remove poverty from domestic chicken and eggs.
He suggested that the government should provide chickens and eggs to the village women, which would enable them to start their own poultry business.
While Imran Khan’s plan was criticized by his political opponents, he was ridiculed on social media.
However, after that, the Poultry Scheme was formally launched in Punjab under the Agriculture Emergency Program under which 2 million chickens were to be distributed in Punjab over four years.
